My great grandfather, Alexander Herro, came to the United States in 1892 from the city of Zahle, in what is now Lebanon.  At that time, Lebanon did not yet exist.  This was part of the Ottoman Empire.  From the maps of the area, Zahle appears to be in a Christian area in Bekka Valley section of Lebanon.

Alexander landed in Philadelphia and traveled to Chicago and Wisconsin.  In 1899, he became a naturalized US citizen.  While I do not have a photo of Alexander Herro, I do have one of his wife, my great grandmother, Tekla Herro.  (I believe that this photo was taken in Chicago.)

Alexander and Tekla had five children.  My grandfather was known as Ed in the US.  Overseas people knew him as Oadie.  Ed had 3 brothers Joe, Jimmy, Mike, and a sister named Wadea.   My grandfather Ed Herro married my Grandmother Victoria Ackel in Chicago, Il.  They later settled in Brooklyn, NY.   They had four children:  In birth order, Lyla, Edna, Simmy and Robert.

My father Simmy Herro married my mother Evelyn Awamy in 1951.  They had five kids: Carolyn, Billy, Michael, Jimmy and Rich (me).   We grew up in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, NY.   The family has long since moved out of Brooklyn.  Carolyn and Michael both live in Florida.  Billy lives on Long Island.  Jimmy and I both live in Central New Jersey.

Family Tree.

Here are some other family photos.
